Todd thought that because he and Carpenter were close, that it meant he deserved to be in a romantic relationship with her. He comments that she looks lonely, and Carpenter thinks to herself that with a friend like him it's no wonder she's lonely.[1]
Background[]
After a long friendship, Todd asks Carpenter if she has thought about them being in a relationship. Carpenter declined his offer, being uninterested. He reacted poorly to the rejection, coming up with a barrage of reasons why she might not be interested in a relationship: that she must still be connected to her forbidden religion, that she wants to be a vestal virgin, or that she is purposefully depriving herself of happiness. He continues, attempting to persuade her, but finally gives up and later tells their friends the reason they're not dating is because there's something wrong with her.[1]
